Substance Abuse Prevention

The use of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs is one of the biggest problems facing young people today.  This information is designed to help parents prevent some of these problems.

Prevention Starts With Parents

There are no guarantees that your child will not choose to use drugs, but as a parent, you can influence that decision by:

  • not using drugs yourself

  • providing guidance and clear rules about not using drugs

Bullying Information

On Tuesday, November 22, 2011, there was an assembly at Wells Central School for students in grades 6-12 titled Sweethearts and Heroes.  The presenter, Tom Murphy, a MMA (mixed martial artist), talked about how it is important for students to speak up and be someone's hero when they see a bullying incident occur.  Students in grades 7-9 from Lake Pleasant Central School also attended the presentation.  After the large group presentation, Mr. Murphy held a focus group with a question and answer session for the Wells 7-9th grade students.  The faculty also had an opportunity to meet with Mr.

Parenting Programs

Our agency offers support and education on parenting through 2 programs:

Common Sense Parenting: provides logical, practical techniques for teaching your child important skills and positive behaviors.                                            

P.E.A.C.E.: an educational program for separating and divorcing parents designed to lessen parental conflict and its impact on children. The P.E.A.C.E program is a certified provider of the NYS Parent Education and Awareness Program on the NYS Office of Court Administration. For more information click the link below:           

Available Services

Counseling

Clinical counseling services are available for individuals, couples, and families. Counseling entails meeting with a therapist in a private setting on a regular basis. An assessment, followed by treatment planning and intervention are undertaken. Frequent monitoring and review of progress toward goals is done routinely. Completion of a course of therapy is ideally the result of joint decision between clinician and client.

Case Management & Family Support

Case management services are intended to ensure that the most basic needs (ie. adequate shelter, clothing, and nutrition), of either individuals or families are met. Subsequent Case Management services might entail assistance in ensuring that clients gain access to psychiatric, psychological, social, educational, medical, vocational, and any and all other services that promote their ability to achieve and maintain independence and optimal functioning in the community.

The staff of Hamilton County Community Services, is committed to providing quality professional counseling and support services to assist individuals and families with the extraordinary challenges of daily life in the 21st century. We offer a range of programming in an effort to empower people to better manage the complex and stressful situations of their lives.

Sharps Disposal

We have been receiving a lot of phone calls regarding sharps disposal, since the recent changes Hamilton County Solid Waste Management have made.  We have collaborated with NYSDOH, DEC, and Solid Waste Management to find answers for the residents.  Residents who use sharps can disposal of them in the following ways:

Prevention

The Prevention Programs offered by Hamilton County Community Service target family relationships, peer relationships, the school environment and the community environment for prevention education. Each of these domains can be a setting for deterring the initiation of drug use through increasing social and self competency skills, adoption of pro-social attitudes and behaviors, and awareness of the harmful health, social and psychological consequences of drug abuse.

School-based

The Prevention Educators at Hamilton County Community Services are dedicated to providing evidenced-based programs, which have been developed, tested and found to be both cost effective as well as effective in deterring substance abuse and other problem behaviors, for students in grades Pre-K thru 12. These programs are designed to help increase social and self-competency skills and awareness of the harmful health, social and psychological consequences of drug use.
